Outer and Inner Sun Worship

by Wendell E. Wilkinson

A powerful spiritual practice is to get up early every morning to worship the sun as it rises. As the ancient Hindu Gayatri mantra says: “May we gaze on the splendor of your guiding power that charges us with light.”

Our Sun is alive and conscious. Behind our Sun is the light of all lights, the Sun of all Suns, the Source, The Supreme Light. We are a spark of that great light. Meditate on the Sun and you will feel your soul-glow increase. As the Sun is the center of our universe so do we have a spiritual Sun-heart that gives light, warmth, and intelligence to our mind and body.

A plaque at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. describes how closely we are related to our Sun and the other Stars: “Stars are the ancestral well of the universe. In the turbulent lifetimes of millions of Stars, matter has been forged in the explosive transaction with energy. Oxygen, carbon, nitrogen; gasses, liquids, and solids; almost all the natural elements are born in the Stars. “We ourselves are made of Star matter. We are the matter of the universe itself — combined in new shapes — struggling to comprehend its origins, its symmetry, and its destiny. Studying the Stars is both a curiosity about the unknown and the molecular longing for home. The Stars guard the answers to our mysteries. They hold the keys to both the future and the past.

To the ancients the Sun was the visible face of God. They felt themselves to be the children of the Sun. The prime mystery of the Sun for the ancients was its mysterious disappearance in the west at night and its return to the east at dawn. Thus it became the first symbol of resurrection. Thanks to the light of the radiant morning they were able to see the world once more. They may have been cold and uncomfortable at night, but with the return of the Sun they felt warm and alive. I think it is partly due to our buildings, electric lights, and heating systems that we do not see the Sun as the ancients did. But even today we can see the Sun as a key symbol of profound spiritual significance.

So what can the Sun symbolize for us today? The Sun is the origin of life, as outlined on that plaque at the Smithsonian Institution. The Sun is the cause of everything and the center of our universe. Behind the Sun is the Infinite Mother Light, The Cosmic Intelligence. The Sun is a divine symbol of this that we can see with our eyes. The Sun symbolizes divine consciousness in creation. Its rays are everywhere. Its light nourishes vegetation. The Sun faces all beings equally and feeds them all equally. We are all alive because of the Sun. The outer Sun can be a symbol of our internal Sun of illumination and soul awareness. An inner flame glows within us. When we discover and feed our awareness of this inner Sun then the radiant morning of Cosmic Consciousness dawns within us and the book of nature reveals her secrets.

I now want to give you a meditation for the Sun in the outer world and a meditation for your inner Sun:

The Meditations

About twenty-five years ago I had an experience with the Sun of God. For about a week I got up every morning to watch the Sun come up. On that last day I felt a liquid electricity from the Sun enter the top of my head. It was in earth-time about 30 seconds of ecstasy. I have not had that particular experience again, but I feel some of its light has stayed with me.
