In a new study, researchers used a complex computer prediction model to determine that intake of vitamin D3 and calcium would prevent 58,000 new cases of breast cancer and 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer annually in the U.S. and Canada. The researchers’ model also predicted that 75 percent of deaths from these cancers could be prevented with adequate intake of vitamin D3 and calcium.

Doctors in Sweden caution that vitamin D deficiency caused by a lack of sunlight could explain the country’s increased incidence of autism. The lack of sunlight in Sweden, combined with the use of sun protection creams and general precautions taken to avoid direct sun exposure is known to cause vitamin D deficiencies. Vitamin D deficiencies could be a contributing factor to the incidence of depression and some experts believe, autism.

A new study by researchers at the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City suggests that Vitamin D contributes to a strong and healthy heart as well – and that inadequate levels of the vitamin may significantly increase a person’s risk of stroke, heart disease, and death, even among people who’ve never had heart disease. Australian researchers have discovered that myopia (nearsightedness or shortsightedness) may not be caused by excessive reading as is commonly thought. New studies show that children from Sydney, Australia spent twice as much time reading as children in Singapore, yet developed ten times less cases of myopia. The key difference is that Sydney-based children spent four times more time outside in the sun.
