The Times of India interviewed Swami Surya Jowel, one of India’s most famous sun gazers. Swami Surya Jowel was asked about to compare religion and spirituality, how to achieve spiritual realisation, the importance of Suryayog, and the naure of Surya or the Sun.
The Energy-giving Sun as Protector and Sustainer

What is the difference between religion and spirituality?
Religion is like a cage; spirituality is the bird. Religion is restrictive in the sense that it is bound by scripture, rites and rituals. It is external. The bird of spirituality has the freedom to establish direct link with the Absolute. Spirituality is all about inner purity where love is unconditional, faith is undivided, and the mind is above matter. Misuse of religion leads to communal disharmony and violence. Spirituality is soul-search; it can only lead to peace and harmony with oneself and with society and nature.
There is no contradiction between religion and spirituality. No religion teaches to hurt or harm. It is the misinterpretation of religion that gives it a bad name, leading to divisions. Spirituality is free of dogma and so can help one rise above religious dogmatism, to be one with the Supreme spirit.
How can one achieve spiritual realisation?
One way is to practise and propagate Suryayog. The ancient scientific technique helps in imbibing positive and curative energy from the Sun into our seven chakras or energy centres. It sets you on the path to a healthy lifestyle — spiritually, mentally and physically.
At the physical level, the healing rays of the Sun remove imbalances of auras and chakras, caused by a life of stress. Photons from the Sun can help smoothen and enlighten the body, prana, mind and soul to come together in a straight line. The omnipotent Surya’s presence can change, arrange, reduce, remove imbalances and organise the chemical, biochemical, bioelectrical and biomagnetic powers in living beings. This, in turn, sets in motion the body’s own curative and defence mechanisms to fight against chronic diseases and withstand health hazards.
At the mental and emotional levels Suryayog enhances concentration power, optimises efficiency, rejuvenates memory cells and improves mind control to liberate the mind to dissolve into the innermost self. When you are at peace with your self, you will be at peace with the outside, too.
Suryayog helps you penetrate darkness of the mind, dispelling ignorance and putting you in laya or in oneness with the nature. This inspires you to search within, leading you to a receptive state of mind to communicate with the Absolute and discover the joy of living the natural cosmic way.
What is the social relevance of Suryayog?
The very word SUN denotes Single Unified Nation, where there will be one classification — humanity; one religion — love; and one god — who is omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient, the Absolute.
Is Surya god or nature?
God is nirakara, nirguna, unmanifest, attributeless, a vast shunyata. Surya is the supremo of the solar system, the third eye of mother nature. The Sun is the life force and sustainer of earth and life there. So, the Sun is the only living god. Suryayog reveres nature. Nature makes us, nature takes us, to nature we belong. The Aitareya Upanishad states: “Fire, becoming speech, entered the mouth. Air becoming breath, entered the nostrils. The Sun, becoming sight, entered the eyes…”. We should treat Surya as Sakha, the friend, who is always there for us and cares without discrimination like Prakriti and Paramatma.
